BRC Clyde Burton House Project: Design Advocates in Support of BRC

Help Design Advocates build a rooftop oasis for formerly homeless seniors.

About Design Advocates:  Working with local nonprofits, businesses and institutions to help them adapt their spaces and operations to the COVID-19 era and beyond, Design Advocates is a platform for architects and designers to share resources and collaborate on efforts to serve the public good through pro bono projects, research, and advocacy.

The Project: Located in the lower east side, BRC Clyde Burton House is a permanent single-room occupancy (SRO) housing facility with a capacity for 33 formerly homeless men and women over the age of 55. In addition to providing permanent housing for its tenants, Clyde Burton House offers a variety of services aimed at helping clients maintain their independence and build a community of support among peers, including case management, medication monitoring, referrals to medical facilities, health education, psychiatric management, entitlement support and money management, recreational activities, assistance with activities of daily living and free meals.

In an effort to provide our senior residents with a private, safe, outdoor space, we hope to create a small, rooftop oasis.  Already equipped with a small deck, our goal is to install permanent seating, shade from the elements, and a small urban garden for herbs and flowers.  Through a partnership with Design Advocates, a beautiful design has been created; we simply need the proper funds to bring this sanctuary to our clients.

Rather than create wealth for private developers, could we use the same shelter contract to create housing for low-income people?
