Meet Calvin, a Bronx native who found himself at BRC’s Reaching New Heights Shelter after a family dispute left him unexpectedly unsheltered at the age of 21.

Devastated by the separation from his family, Calvin focused on his passion for basketball and the belief he could build a new and better life for himself. Shudana, BRC’s Housing and Employment Development Specialist, helped guide Calvin and encouraged him to pursue opportunities that leveraged his experience and interests.

Having coached youth sports programs in his local community for seven years, Calvin was able to land his dream job as a basketball coach at a renowned youth sports training facility in Manhattan. He soon moved into his own one-bedroom apartment and is focused on applying to schools to study sports education to help the youth in his community fulfill their own dreams, just as he did.
